Inspire vs. iPhone: Smartphone Showdown

The iPhone 4 is, of course, one of the most popular smartphones in existence. The HTC Inspire is one of the best Android phones currently on the market. Which is the better choice?

The Competitors

The HTC Inspire and iPhone 4 are two common choices for AT&T subscribers. One is a flagship Android phone, while the other is Apple's most recent version of its incredibly popular iPhone.
Both of these devices have their pros and cons, but few people have need for more than one smartphone. You'll need to make a choice. Let's put them head-to-head and discover which is the better phone.

Design and Ergonomics

HTC Inspire 4G SpecsThe HTC Inspire is a flagship 4.3 inch display Android phone. The large LCD is accompanied by an equally large chassis that's nearly 5 inches from top to bottom and almost half an inch thick. The weight of the device is 5.7 ounces.
Apple's lean iPhone 4 is just 4.5 inches from top to bottom and is 0.37 inches thick. It's also an ounce lighter at 4.7 ounces. However, the iPhone 4 makes do with a substantially smaller 3.5 inch display.
From a design and ergonomics standpoint, the smaller size of the iPhone 4 is an advantage in most situations. It's an easier phone to handle, particularly for users with small hands. I personally have to stretch a bit to navigate an Inspire's display with one hand, and I stand 6'2". The iPhone 4, however, is very practical even when you have just one hand free.
While the ounce of weight dropped by the iPhone 4 may not seem significant, it does make the device more comfortable to use during long calls. Apple's smartphone is also more attractive. The Inspire is a very plain phone - it doesn't look bad, but it doesn't look great, either.
Overall, the clear winner in this category is the Apple iPhone 4.

Software

Apple's smartphone of course ships with iOS, the tile-based interface that has become a staple of the company's mobile products. This interface works well for a device the size of the iPhone 4, and it is speedy. There's also a wonderful selection of apps on the Apple App Store. Although Android has made huge strides in this area, the selection still is not as solid as what's available for Apple's device.
The HTC Inspire ships with Android running the HTC Sense skin. This is arguably the best of the manufacturer-designed skins for Android phones, and it provides a wide range of functionality with handy widgets, like calendar and contacts, that can be dragged on to the home screens. The 4.3 inch display, combined with widgets (both those included and those available from the Android Market), make the Inspire much better for users who care less about quick access to apps and more about quick access to their information.
As you might expect, this ends in a tie. While iOS is quick and simple, it certainly isn't as customizable or functional as Android can be. On a smaller phone iOS is the better choice, but a large 4.3 inch device like the Inspire gives Android room to stretch its legs.

Hardware

iPhone 4 vs HTC InspireThe HTC Inspire was among the premier Android smartphones when it debuted, and this was thanks to its 1 GHz Snapdragon processor combined with 768 MB of RAM. This is a powerful combination, and to this day there are only a handful of phones that are quicker, such as the HTC Thunderbolt on Verizon and the Motorola Atrix on AT&T.
Apple's iPhone 4, on the other hand, runs an 800 MHz Apple A4 processor which is paired with 512 MB of RAM. This combination was a real knock-out when it arrived, and it's still good even today. But it's certainly no match for the raw power the Inspire can offer.
There are several others hardware advantages for the Inspire. It comes with 4 GB of internal storage and comes with an 8 GB memory card, but this can be upgraded to a whopping 32 GB, while the iPhone 4 cannot be upgraded. The Inspire also has a better 8 MP camera, compared to the 5 MP version on Apple's device.
However, the iPhone does strike back when it comes to display resolution. While the Inspire's 4.3 inch display is physically larger, its resolution is just 480 x 800, compared to 640 x 960 on the iPhone 4. The iPhone also includes a 0.3 MP front facing camera, while the Inspire does not.
Overall, the hardware winner is the HTC Inspire.

Verdict

So - HTC Inspire vs iPhone 4. Which is the overall winner?
It's a close call. The iPhone 4 has better design, better ergonomics, and a small but high-resolution display. The HTC Inspire has faster hardware, higher storage capacity, and a larger display.
But there can only be one, and I name the HTC Inspire 4G the victor by a nose, largely because of the price. Currently the Inspire is a measly $99 on AT&T with a two-year contract of $449.99 without. The iPhone 4, however, is $199 to $299 with a two-year contract and $599 to $699 without. And good luck getting it without the contract - the sales reps usually fight it tooth-and-nail.
Another factor in the Inspire's victory is the iPhone 4's expected replacement by the iPhone 5 in the next few months. There's no reason to pay top dollar for an Apple product that will soon be second-best.

Top 10 Android Smartphones

This is a list of the top 10 Android phones for 2011. Android is the best smartphone OS out there. These are the best Android smartphones that money can buy.

Android has matured a lot as a platform since it arrived a few years ago. It has been gaining market share steadily and now holds a dominant position in the US. Thousands of new Android devices are getting activated each day; with this kind of growth, it was inevitable that Android would become the number one smartphone OS.
Here's a list of the top ten Android powered smartphones for 2011 which have been released or are about to hit the market.

1. Samsung Galaxy S II

Samsung Galaxy S IIThe original Samsung Galaxy S was a smash hit and it catapulted Samsung into pole position as an Android smartphone manufacturer. The follow up, the Samsung Galaxy S II is unbeatable. It is packing a dual core 1.2 GHz ARM Cortex A-9 processor with 1 GB of RAM. The Super AMOLED Plus display is 4.3 inches at a resolution of 480 x 800 pixels and it looks amazing. It comes in 16 GB or 32 GB varieties and with the option to add another 32 GB via a microSD card no phone offers more storage. The camera is 8 MP and it offers 1080p video recording. It runs on Android 2.3 with the TouchWiz 4.0 overlay. It is thinner and lighter than the iPhone 4 and right now there is no better Android smartphone available.

2. Motorola Atrix 4G

Motorola AtrixThe Motorola Atrix represents an attempt to innovate in the smartphone market. This device can dock with a laptop or media station peripheral and double up as your hub for both. Unfortunately the optional extras are expensive and it remains to be seen whether this kind of functionality is really in demand. Even setting that aside this is an awesomely powerful phone. You've got a dual core 1 GHz Tegra 2 processor, 1 GB of RAM, a 4 inch touch screen display with a resolution of 950 x 540 pixels and a 5 MP camera with 720p video capture. There is 16 GB of internal memory and you can add another 32 GB with a microSD card. It runs on Android 2.2 with the MotoBLUR overlay.

3. HTC Thunderbolt

HTC ThunderboltThe HTC Thunderbolt was the first big release from HTC on Verizon's 4G LTE network. Launched after a massive advertising campaign the Thunderbolt is a formidable smartphone. It features a second generation 1GHz Snapdragon processor, 768 MB of RAM, a 4.3 inch capactive touch screen display with a resolution of 480 x 800 pixels and an 8 MP camera capable of 720p video recording. It has 8 GB internal memory, expandable to 32 GB with a microSD card and it runs on Android 2.2 with the Sense UI overlay. It is fast, attractive and powerful.

4. LG Optimus 3D

LG Optimus 3DHere is another entry trying to innovate in the smartphone market and the unique selling point here is the ability to display and record 3D footage. It works without special glasses but the 3D effect is mild and requires you to view the display head on. It has a dual core 1 GHz processor, 512 MB of RAM, a 4.3 inch touch screen display with a resolution of 480 x 800 pixels and a 5 MP camera which can record 1080p footage and 3D. It has 8 GB of internal memory which is expandable to 32 GB with a microSD card and it runs on Android 2.2 with LG's 3D

5. Google Nexus S

Google Nexus SThe follow up to the Nexus One, the Nexus S was developed by Samsung. In terms of hardware it can't compete with the other entries on this list but because it features the vanilla Android OS it will receive upgrades to the platform before other phones. Currently it runs on Android 2.3. It has a 1 GHz Hummingbird processor with 512 MB of RAM. Internal storage is 16 GB but you can't expand that. The display is a 4 inch Super AMOLED touch screen with a resolution of 480 x 800 pixels. It has a 5 MP camera but it lacks support for HD video recording. It is a great Android smartphone but other releases are quickly surpassing it and the vanilla Android OS is the only real attraction.

6. Sony Ericsson Xperia Play

Sony Ericsson Xperia PlayThe specs of the Sony Ericsson Xperia Play are not going to blow you away but this is the long awaited PlayStation phone and so for gamers it is a great choice. The phone slides open to reveal a proper PlayStation gamepad. It sports a 1 GHz processor with 512 MB of RAM. The display is a 4 inch capacitive touch screen with a resolution of 480 x 854 pixels. The internal memory is just 400 MB but it ships with an 8 GB microSD card and you could switch that for a 32 GB card. It also had a 5 MP camera but with no HD recording. On the plus side it runs Android 2.3.

7. Kyocera Echo

Kyocera EchoHere's another unusual entry on the list with a unique selling point. The Kyocera Echo is a dual screen Android smartphone. The specs are unimpressive with a 1 GHz Snapdragon processor, 512 MB of RAM and 1 GB of internal memory (expandable to 32 GB via a microSD card). It also has a 5 MP camera with 720p video recording capability. The real attraction here, though, is obviously the dual screens. Both are 3.5 inch capacitive touch screens with a resolution of 480 x 800 pixels. With the screens combined you're looking at a 4.7 inch display which is a definite draw.

8. Samsung Epic 4G

Samsung Epic 4GIt can't match the awesome Galaxy S II but what might attract you to the Samsung Epic 4G is the presence of a slide out QWERTY keyboard. It has a 1 GHz processor with 512 MB RAM. Internal memory is just 512 MB, but it is expandable to 32 GB with a microSD card. There's a 5 MP camera and it does support 720p video recording. It also sports a stunning 4 inch Super AMOLED touch screen with a resolution of 480 x 800 pixels. The keyboard is solidly built and comfortable to use, but inevitably it adds bulk to the phone.

9. HTC Inspire 4G

HTC Inspire 4GThis is another solid release from HTC. The Inspire 4G is packing a 1 GHz processor backed by 768 MB of RAM. It has a 4.3 inch S-LCD touch screen with a resolution of 480 x 800 pixels. Internal memory is 4 GB and you have the usual expansion option up to 32 GB with a microSD card (it ships with an 8 GB card). It has an 8 MP camera and can record 720p video. It runs on Android 2.2. Probably the main attraction of the Inspire is the fact it is available for a fair bit less than most of the other Android smartphones on this list.

10. Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc

Sony Ericsson Xperia ArcThis slim and stylish entry from Sony Ericsson is one of the most attractive Android smartphones out there. It has a 1 GHz processor with 512 MB RAM. It only has 320 MB of internal storage but it ships with an 8 GB microSD card and you could switch that for a 32 GB version if you need more. It has a really nice 8 MP camera and can record 720p video footage. The 4.2 inch touch screen has a resolution of 480 x 854 pixels. The Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc is slimmer than the iPhone 4 and if looks are a key factor for you then you might consider it.

CES 2011 was a great success; seeing all those awesome smartphones and tablets in one place would give even the hardiest gadget lover reasons enough to melt. If there were two words that one got to hear more than any others at CES, they were Android and Tablet.
There were a lot of new tablet announcements, most of them powered by Android. Besides these, there were also many good Android smartphones unveiled at CES by the likes of HTC, Samsung and more. Let's take a look at the phones that you should keep your eye out for over this year.

LG-Optimus-2X-new

Motorola Atrix 4G

The Motorola Atrix 4G is also a dual core Nvidia Tegra 2 toting Android smartphone which runs Android 2.2 Froyo with an Android 2.3atrixdock Gingerbread upgrade in the pipeline. It comes with 16 GB internal memory and offers 3G HSDPA connectivity with Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, GPS etc. One of the more appealing abilities of the Atrix though, is the capability of turning your smartphone into a netbook with a lightweight lapdock. Simply slot your phone in the dock, and it will power up the dock with ease. It's not as slick as using a standard netbook but is still a pretty neat feature especially for frequent travelers.

Motorola Droid Bionic

Samsung Infuse 4G

infuse-4gEver since the Galaxy S launched, Samsung has become the leader in Android smartphones. The Galaxy S is easily the most popular Android phone yet. At CES 2011, Samsung showcased the Samsung Infuse 4G, which takes it a step further.

It has been dubbed "The Nations Thinnest Smartphone", and at an anorexic 8.99 mm no one is going to argue. Despite its slender frame, it's still a hard hitting contender to be the best smartphone of 2011.

Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc

xperia-arcThe Xperia Arc was one of the most stylish phones, if not technically the best Android phone on show at CES 2011. It has a very sleek design and comes packed with power. It has a 1 GHz Snapdragon processor, 512 MB RAM and an Adreno 205 GPU. It also comes with 16 GB internal storage and runs Android 2.3 Gingerbread.
It has a 4.2 inch LED backlit capacitive display and comes with an 8 MP camera with autofocus and LED flash. It can record 720p HD video and includes GPRS, EDGE, 3G, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS etc. It doesn't measure up to many of the other phones in our list, that offer full HD recording abilities or a dual core processor, but do not underestimate this stylish looking device; especially if you like curves to caress.

Xperia neo Front40 Black HS Portrait (1)Xperia pro BlackXperia PLAY Black screen1 (1)Sony Ericsson was one of the first manufacturers to announce new smartphones during Mobile World Congress 2011. The company actually unveiled three new phones under the Xperia product line. These are the Sony Ericsson Xperia Pro, Xperia Neo and of course the much awaited Xperia Play gaming smartphone. The key feature of the Xperia Pro and the Xperia Neo is the so called Reality Display with Mobile BRAVIA Engine. This enables both smartphones to deliver visual brilliance and crystal clear images. This is well complimented by Sony's Exmor R for mobile sensor that enables the phones to capture high quality, bright pictures and HD videos even in low-light environments. Practically, when it comes to features and specs the Xperia Pro and Xperia Neo are very similar. One major difference between these two phones is the fact that the Xperia Pro has a slide-out QWERTY keyboard while the Xperia Neo is a full-touch screen phone.
As for the Sony Ericsson Xperia Play, this is practically a mobile gaming smartphone. It has a nice slide-out game keypad featuring the digital D-pad, two analogue touch pads, two shoulder buttons and the familiar Playstation icons - circle, cross, square and triangle. To meet the needs of 3D gaming, the Xperia Play is loaded with a 1 GHz Snapdragon CPU and Adreno GPU graphics processor. This allows 60fps play-back of 3D games. The Sony Ericsson Xperia Play will be available by March 2011 while the Xperia Pro is scheduled for release by end of Q2 2011 and the Xperia Neo will be released by end of Q1 2011.

HTC Salsa and HTC ChaCha

htcsalsahtcchachaHTC's contribution to MWC 2011 is composed of two sets of new smartphones. First of all, the HTC Salsa and HTC ChaCha, which are quite interesting smartphones for the simple reason that these phones feature a dedicated Facebook button located on the lower portion of the device. This Facebook button provides one-touch access to the key functions of Facebook service which is then integrated into the HTC Sense User Interface. Both devices also run Android 2.3 Gingerbread.
When it comes to specs and features, the two HTC phones are almost identical except for the fact that the HTC ChaCha has a slide-out QWERTY keyboard and 2.6-inch touch screen display. While the HTC Salsa is a full-touch screen phone with 3.4-inch size. Both phones have a 5 MP back-facing and VGA front-facing cameras.

HTC Desire S, HTC Wildfire S, HTC Incredible S

htcwildfireshtcincredibleshtcdesiresThe second set of new smartphones which HTC unveiled are actually updated versions of the company's previous smartphones. These are the HTC Desire S, HTC Desire Wildfire S and HTC Incredible S. The "S" could represent the HTC Sense UI which is integrated deeply into the three smartphones overall interface (although it was also present in their predecessors). Whatever it stands for the phones look good. Briefly, here are the key specs and features of each of these phones.
The HTC Desire S features a 1 GHz Snapdragon MSM8255 processor, and 3.7-inch WVGA display. The phone sports an aluminum design and also has dual front and back cameras that can record HD video. The HTC Wildfire S is a small smartphone with 3.2-inch HVGA display, 5 MP camera with auto-focus, Facebook integration, and microSD memory card support. Finally, the HTC Incredible S features HD video, 4-inch WVGA Super LCD Display, stereo surround sound, 8 MP camera with dual flash, videos, photos and music sharing through DLNA technology and a front-facing camera for video calls.
